Step 1

Locate your sprinkler water shut off, this is usually in the basement

Step 2: 

Turn valve to off (parallel on, perpendicular off). 

Step 3: 

Remove brass drain cap and place a bucket underneath.

Step 4: 

Place drain cap in a plastic bag and hang off the handle or keep somewhere safe in order to prevent losing the drain cap. 

Step 5: 

Locate backflow preventer which should be on the outside of the house.

Step 6: 

Use a screwdriver to turn testcocks so they are half open, half closed (45 degrees). 

Step 7: 

Turn ball valves 45 degrees.

Step 8: 

Locate sprinkler manifold and open brass drain at the end of the manifold to let water out. 

Step 9: 

If your manifold has auto drain as shown here, then water will slowly release itself.

Step 10: 

Turn your sprinkler clock to the "off" position.
